Conn, prominent in Albert By John Maddock Contributing Reporter Donald L. Conn, of Melrose, prosecuting attorney in the trial of Albert DeSalvo, the selfBoston Strangler, died of heart failure Monday in Beth Israel Hospital. He was 50. Mr. Conn earned nationwide fame in January 1967, when, as assistant Middlesex County district attorney, he prosecuted the late DeSalvo of Malden in an armed robbery case.

Shortly after his conviction, DeSalvo escaped from Bridgewater State Hospital and Massachusetts Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson assigned Mr. Conn to the trial section in the criminal division of the State Attorney General's office a postition that' placed him charge of the successful search for DeSalvo, who eventually was returned to Walpole state prison. DeSalvo had received a life term for the robbery as well as other sexual molestation charges unrelated to the murders of 13 women in and around the Boston area between 1962 and 1964. DeSalvo confessed to committing those murders, but never was convicted nor was he tried for any of them.

It was his confessions which led to his being known as the "Boston Strangler." DeSalvo was found strangled in his cell in November 1973. The trial and conviction of DeSalvo was described by Mr. Conn as "the most famous criminal case since World War II." His opponent in that case was the famed defense lawyer F. Lee Bailey, a classmate of Mr. Conn's at Boston University Law School.

Mr. Conn was a lifelong resident of Melrose, and graduated from New Hampton Preparatory School in New Hampshire in 1953, Tufts University in 1957, and Boston University School of Law in 1960, and he joined the Massachusetts Bar Association that same year. He also served as vice chairman of the Melrose Planning Board in the early 1960s. DEATHS 50, prosecutor DeSalvo case DUARTE -In Somerville, September 16, 1986, Rose, age 83.
