Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 30, 2024 www.hap2it.com Mad Max series creator George Miller said the latest entry in his post-apocalyptic saga, Furiosa, still speaks to historic issues. The film opened last Friday and topped the box office with $25.5M in receipts over the Memorial Day weekend. Set 40 to 50 years after the collapse of society, the conflicts between survivors and warlords remain timeless, Miller said. "Even though this is set in a post-apocalyptic future, the behavior goes back to the Dark Ages or medieval times," the 79- year-old said during a recent Zoom press conference. "It goes back to raw, elemental behavior." Miller began the series in 1979, with former cop Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) wandering the wasteland after marauders murdered his family. Furiosa is the origin story of the character whom Max (now Tom Hardy) encountered in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa shows how young Furiosa (Alyla Brown) was taken from her home in the only remaining lush oasis of vegetation. Growing up with her captor, Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the adult Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) reluctantly allies herself with Dementus' rival, Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme). "Conflict, as you know, is the staple of all drama from the earliest times, in all storytelling tradition," Miller said. "When you get rising conflict in stories, it reveals some essence about the characters and the world." Miller said he is interested in why human beings have always told stories. His medium happens to be cinema, but Miller noted storytelling dates to ancient mythology and religious texts. "The medium always changes, but story is fundamental to who we are as human beings," he said. "We are hardwired for it. It's the way our brains work, both individually and collectively." In Furiosa, Dementus and Immortan Joe go to war with each other, each commanding an army of followers. Meanwhile, Furiosa focuses on her survival and escape. That can mean getting involved in the warlords' conflict. For example, Furiosa joins a supply run so she can learn to drive one of Immortan Joe's tankers. Like the Mad Max films, Furiosa includes many car chases and explosive battles. However, Miller said, the themes of corrupt power and survival make the films last in viewers' minds. "You tell the stories to people and they make of it what they will," Miller said. "Wherever you are in time and space, you're responding to things in the story that have meaning to you." The story of Furiosa leads up to the beginning of Fury Road and features earlier versions of characters Furiosa and Immortan Joe. Miller said Taylor-Joy was able to portray the character's depth of thought with very little dialogue, as Charlize Theron did playing the character in Fury Road. "In the wasteland, words don't mean much," he said. "You interact by action." Miller created the new character, Dementus, before he cast Hemsworth. One of Miller's ideas was that Dementus carried around a teddy bear, the last remnant of his own family. Once cast, he said, Hemsworth made Dementus' teddy bear more pivotal in the story, offering it to young Furiosa. "[Hemsworth] saw that as a way of connecting with Furiosa," he said, adding that Dementus "saw himself, in a wacky sort of way, as a mentor as to how to survive the wasteland." As Miller studied storytelling through cinema in his 45-year career, he said he has observed audiences' relationships with films become more immediate. With the advent of the Internet and social media, he said he can witness engagement much faster. "It used to take about 10 years for a consensus to settle on the story," Miller said. "Now, that's accelerated because all information and human exchange has accelerated so much." By Fred Topel 'Mad Max' creator George Miller: Futuristic 'Furiosa' addresses timeless conflict George Miller (R) directs Anya Taylor-Joy in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." Born March 3, 1945 (age 79) Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia Miller's first work, the short film“Violence in Cinema: Part 1”(1971), polarised critics, audiences and distributors so much that it was placed in the documentary category at the 1972Sydney Film Festivaldue to its matter-of-fact depiction of cinematic violence. In 1979, Miller made his feature-length directorial debut with“Mad Max.” The film starred young unknown Australian actor Mel Gibson. For the 1981 sequel, the film was retitled “The Road Warrior” in the US, due to international audiences not being familiar with the original film. Many franchises are passed on to other creators for expanded projects. Not the case with “Mad Max” - all five films in the series have all been written and directed by George Miller. Miller would also direct “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987), “Babe: Pig in the City” (1998), and both “Happy Feet” films (2006, 2011). FYI George Miller FYI Anya Taylor-Joy Born Anya-Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy April 16, 1996 (age 28) Miami, Florida While living in London at age 17, Taylor-Joy was scouted by a model agency rep while walking her dog. After a few small television roles, she played the lead role in“The Witch”(2015). Taylor-Joy received critical acclaim for her performance. In 2020, Taylor-Joy starred in the Netflix miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit” as an orphaned chess prodigy on her rise to the top of the chess world while struggling with drug and alcohol issues. The series and her performance was a huge success, with her winning Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards for her performance, as well as an Emmy nomination.
www.hap2it.com May 30, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Janine, the spin class instructor, breezed into the room, mounted her bike and greeted the already sweating class with her normal Saturday morning salutation. “Is everybody ready to WORK?” Mumbles and groans abounded. A few raised thumbs signaled that at least some participants eagerly awaited 45 minutes of torture. “I made an oldies playlist for today’s class, “ she said, her legs spinning faster. “Hope you all like it.” With that, an unrecognizable, to me anyway, song blared from the speakers. Over the THUMP THUMP THUMP of an electronic bass line, I heard Janine say, “What was everybody doing back in 2012?” “Celebrating my 49th birthday,” I yelled back. “I thought you said we were going to hear some ‘oldies.’” “I was a high school sophomore when I first heard this one,” came a voice from the row of bikes behind me. “This was our prom theme,” said another. I hesitated to ask the song’s title and artist; by now, I had firmly established myself as the class’s doddering curmudgeon. How much worse could I feel? “Who is this?” I asked, while heeding Janine’s instructions to, “GIVE ME A FEW MORE GEARS!” “Calvin Harris,” somebody yelled. “Calvin Harris,” I repeated. “Didn’t he date Taylor Swift for a while?” I have no idea how that piece of information escaped the recesses of my brain, but the class was impressed.” “Very good,” one cyclist yelled, as if he were a doctor diagnosing a potential Alzheimer’s patient. “Come on, everyone,” Janine interrupted. “We’re here to WORK!” The class settled into the task at hand, pedaling, grunting, perspiring and, in my case, contemplating the definition of “oldie” as it relates to music. I associate the word with 1970s artists like ABBA, Three Dog Night and David Bowie. I’d add The Rolling Stones, The Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, yet all continue defying age while selling out stadiums and arenas. Last summer I saw Springsteen hold 40,000 Wrigley Field patrons in his hand. That man is not old, although I can’t say the same for his fan base. So, how would Sir Mick Jagger, 80 years young, define an “oldies” playlist? Chocked full of tunes from Bill Haley, Pat Boone and the McGuire Sisters? If so, he should share that playlist on Spotify. My 88-year-old mother would love it, assuming she knows how to access Spotify, download a Spotify playlist and can pair Spotify with a bluetooth speaker so those sweet oldies sounds resonate through her entire unit in the independent living community. As class ended, I realized that, no matter one’s age, there will always be an “oldies” or “classic” list of tunes to satisfy a craving for nostalgia. Even tattooed-covered rappers who, in their 20s made millions rhyming about gangstas and cribs, will eventually find their music being played in the background of a party that begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 8:30. Yeah, I’m talking to you, Gen Zers. Right now you enjoy beginning your evenings at 10 p.m. and stumbling home with the sunrise, but that’s going to change. You, too, will arrive at that party, discuss your aches and pains, complain about your kids’ soccer schedules and compliment a fellow Gen Z partygoer on her gluten-free spinach dip. Then, as you hear Drake over the din of kitchen conversation, you’ll think, “OMG, I made out to this song in high school!” Of course, I’m assuming this age group will actually ATTEND parties. The way the world is moving, those parties may be created by artificial intelligence. And what does one bring to an AIgenerated get-together? Music has the power to make one feel old or young. I choose the latter. A little Foreigner or Styx on my Airpods makes my knees hurt a bit less as I walk to my local grocery store. Those of you in your 20s, try it some time. It will help prepare you for 30 years from now, when you’re in exercise class and the instructor yells, “So, what was everybody doing back in 2037?” Greg Schwem You’re never too young to listen to the oldies Greg Schwem is a twenty-year stand-up comedy veteran. Kobayashi estimated on the streaming service's documentary, Hack Your Health-The Secrets of Your Gut, that he ate at least 10,000 hot dogs during his career. His wife, Maggie James, said he has sometimes gone days without eating and that his body is broken. "I am Japanese, but I've eaten like an American," Kobayashi said. "I think that's what damaged my body." The 46-yearold was a six-time winner of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, winning those crowns consecutively from 2001 through 2006. Known as the "Tsunami" and Godfather of Competitive Eating," Kobayashi also held records for eating other foods, including meatballs and Twinkies. Kobayashi, who used food to expand his stomach to prepare for eating contests, said he is now on a mission to develop a healthier hot dog. He underwent medical tests during the Netflix documentary, which found that his eating regimen impacted his nervous system and brain activity. "I hear people say they're hungry, and they look very happy after they've eaten," Kobayashi said. "I'm jealous of those people because I no longer feel hunger." The 2024 hot dog eating contest will be held July 4 in Coney Island in Brooklyn, N.Y. Idaho man juggles blindfolded for over an hour Serial recordbreaker David Rush returned to his roots by recapturing his f i r s t - e v e r Guinness World Records title: longest duration juggling three objects blindfolded. Rush, who has since broken more than 250 Guinness World Records, achieved his first title in 2015 when he donned a blindfold and juggled for 6 minutes and 34 seconds. The record-breaking enthusiast has returned to the record on three occasions to increase his time, most recently managing to juggle for 32 minutes 7 seconds in 2021. He lost the record for the first time in eight years when an Australian performer clocked a time of 43 minutes and 30 seconds. Rush said recently setting the record for the longest duration juggling at 13 hours and 10 minutes served as preparation to retake the blindfolded version of the record. He managed to juggle blindfolded for 1 hour, 3 minutes and 4 seconds before dropping a ball, more than enough to recapture his title. Rush now holds 170 concurrent Guinness World Records, bringing him closer to his goal of overtaking Silvio Sabba, who currently holds 180 titles. Ultra-processed foods may raise risk of stroke, dementia Ultra-processed foods are bad for more than your waistline: New research shows they seem to raise the risk of stroke and dementiarelated memory or thinking problems. A 10% increase in the amount of ultra-processed foods a person eats is associated with a 16% higher risk of cognitive problems, researchers found. Likewise, greater intake of ultraprocessed foods is linked to an 8% increased risk of stroke, results show. "Our findings show that the degree of food processing plays an important role in overall brain health," said researcher Dr. W. Taylor Kimberly, a critical care neurologist with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Ultraprocessed foods typically are factory-made fare containing high levels of sugar, fat and salt. They're a patchwork of ingredients, additives and preservatives engineered for flavor and shelf-life. Examples include chicken nuggets, frozen meals, hot dogs, canned soups, potato chips, soft drinks, sugary breakfast cereals, ice cream, packaged breads, and condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise. Ultra-processed foods already have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes, the Cleveland Clinic says. Chimpanzee returns zoo visitor's dropped shoe A helpful chimpanzee at a Chinese zoo was caught on camera returning a shoe that had been dropped into the enclosure by a young visitor. The video, recorded at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in Weihai City, Shandong Province, shows a chimpanzee named Dong Dong playing with a shoe that had been dropped into the enclosure by a child. Onlookers can be heard cheering when the 14-year-old ape tosses the shoe back up to the crowd, where it was returned to the visitor. A zookeeper said Dong Dong is a highly intelligent chimp and has been witnessed returning lost property to visitors in the past. An elephant at the same facility was recently caught on camera performing the a similar service for a child whose shoe fell into the pachyderm's paddock. coast to coast Chicago radio station WCCQ rebranded to Free Country 98.3 & 102.3 On May 24th, Alpha Media Chicago announced the rebranding of WCCQ, a station that’s been playing country music around Chicagoland since 1984, to “Chicagoland’s Free Country” on 98.3 to kick off the Memorial Day weekend. www.hap2it.com May 30, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 7 I used to think of Athens as a big ugly city with obligatory ancient sights, fine museums, the Plaka (an extremely touristy old quarter), and not much else. “The joy of Greece is outside of Athens,” I wrote. “See Athens’ museums and scram.” But while updating my guidebook one summer, I enjoyed the city more than ever before. I discovered a many-faceted city that's getting its act together, despite Greece’s economic struggles. I had a great experience even though it was the worst time of year for a visit. It was sweltering – well over 100 degrees – and since it was mid-August, most Athenians were gone, finding relief on the beach. Still, there was an energy in Athens that made me want to come back and linger … in the spring or fall. I discovered much of that energy in the offbeat parts of the city, thanks to Matt Barrett, who splits his time between Greece and North Carolina. He splashes through his adopted hometown like a kid in a wading pool, enthusiastically sharing his discoveries and observations on his generous website ( www.athensguide.com ). He took me to Exarchia, a student district just a short walk from Athens’ Omonia Square. This area has long been the heart and soul of Athens' feisty love of freedom and its nonconformist spirit. Slathered in colorful graffiti, it's defiant, artsy, and full of life. From the small Exarchia Square, side streets spin off into grungy neighborhoods. Because of the cheap rent and abundance of students (three universities are nearby), the streets are lined with cafés, bars, art centers, and bookstores. Each evening, Exarchia is a thriving festival of alternative lifestyles. The juxtaposition between Exarchia and the adjacent upscale diplomatic district of Kolonaki is striking. A more trendy Athens neighborhood is the Psyrri district north of the Acropolis. Until recently, it was a grimy area of workshops and cottage industries, famous locally as a hotbed of poets, musicians, revolutionaries, and troublemakers. But now it's become one of central Athens’ top after-hours zones. The mix of trendy and crusty gives the area a unique charm. The options include slick, touristy tavernas with live traditional music; highly conceptual café/bars catering to cool young Athenians; and clubs with DJs or live music for partying the night away. By Rick Steves Athens on the rise travel In the “rickety-chic” Psyrri neighborhood of Athens, you’ll find slick outdoor restaurants next to vibrant street art. At least a dozen people were injured by turbulence while traveling to Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday in the latest such incident on international flights. Of the 12 people injured on Qatar Airways flight QR017, six were passengers and six were crew members, the Dublin Airport said in a statement. The plane had left from Doha, Qatar, and experienced turbulence while flying over Turkey. The plane landed shortly before 1 p.m. in Ireland and was met by emergency responders. Eight people were taken to a hospital for treatment. "The return flight to Doha (flight QR018) is scheduled to operate as normal this afternoon, albeit with a delay," airport officials said. "Flight operations at Dublin Airport were unaffected and continue as normal this afternoon." It was not immediately clear why the plane didn't require an emergency landing in another country, as the flight from Turkey to Ireland is over four hours long. The plane was reported to be a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Qatar Airways confirmed the incident to UPI in an emailed statement, saying "a small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in the flight and are now receiving medical attention." "The matter is now subject to an internal investigation," it said. "The Safety and security of our passengers and crew are our top priority." The incident came days after a British passenger died, identified as Geoff Kitchen, and 71 others were injured during extreme turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight. That plane, a Boeing 777- 300ER, was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members from London's Heathrow Airport to Singapore. By Adam Schrader Turbulence injures 12 more people on flight to Dublin Singapore Airlines said it is making changes to its in-flight seatbelt policy after a passenger died aboard one of its flights earlier in the week. The Singapore flag carrier will no longer provide hot beverage or meal service during a flight when the fasten seatbelt sign is illuminated. Suspending service while the fasten seatbelt sign is on is part of a "more cautious approach" to all in-flight service. "Crew members will also continue to advise passengers to return to their seats and secure their seatbelts. They will also monitor customers who may require assistance, including those in the lavatories," the airline said in the statement. The airline will also make changes to at least one of its longhaul routes, after a man from Britain died and dozens of other passengers were injured when "sudden extreme turbulence" hit a flight from London to Singapore Tuesday. The 73-year-old reportedly suffered a heart attack mid-flight, leading the pilot to declare a medical emergency. Airline officials later said the man, who was traveling with his family, had a heart condition. The Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew and was forced to divert to Bangkok after it encountered turbulence 37,000 feet over Myanmar, causing passengers and crew to be thrown around the cabin. Singapore Airlines is continuing to operate the daily route between London and Singapore, but radar records show the carrier has since diverted away from part of Myanmar where the turbulence occurred. Several people who were on the fight remain in the Thailand capital. "Singapore Airlines can confirm that 61 passengers and two crew members who were on board SQ321 are still in Bangkok. This includes 44 passengers and two crew members who are in the hospital receiving medical treatment," the carrier confirmed. Page 8 HAPPENINGS May 30, 2024 www.hap2it.com This Will Hurt You More Than Me Is the idiomatic suggestion that it's best to "rip off a Band-Aid" actually good advice? Is one quick OUCH! better than a series of smaller ows? Researchers in Australia recruited 65 students to determine which bandage removal approach was less painful: quick or slow. Using an 11-point pain scale (0 for no pain, 10 for extreme pain), the students who yanked off their bandages quickly reported an average 0.02 pain score. For those who peeled off their bandages slowly (over two seconds), the average score was 1.58. Researchers tested the approaches on different parts of the body. Location did not matter, but body hair was a factor. Persons with lower body hair counts tended to report less significant discomfort. The study did not account for variables like skin tenderness or the varying adhesive strength of different bandage types. Nor did the study answer whether ripping quickly or slowly worked for other kinds of physical or emotional pain, like romantic breakups. Body of Knowledge Each hour, the human body creates 350,000 joules of energy, which creates the same amount of energy as a 100-watt light bulb. This is enough heat to boil a halfgallon of water in 30 minutes. Stories for the Waiting Room Every generation of parents has its own set of tips and advice for how to do the job right. Here are seven that circulated in the 1800s: 1. Put babies in cages hanging outside windows to get them fresh air. 2. Snacks between meals shouldn't be more than a slice of bread. 3. Get rid of tapeworms with turpentine. 4. Avoid giving green tea (which is believed to contain toxins) to adolescents. 5. Avoid anything green, including toys and clothing — for good reason in this case, since green dyes at the time contained arsenic. 6. Lance baby's gums when their first teeth are emerging. (It was thought that cutting a little hole helped speed the process of teething.) 7. Don't rock kids to soothe them. In this case, the benefit was for the mom. Rocking in chairs was believed to damage women's figures. Best Medicine Q: A doctor, health insurance agent and lab technician walk into a bar. Who pays the tab? A: The patient. Observation "Money cannot buy health, but I'd settle for a diamond-studded wheelchair." — American writer, critic and satirist Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) Fit to Be Tried There are thousands of exercises, and you've only got one body, but that doesn't mean you can't try them all: Supermans are intended to strengthen and benefit the back, butt, hips and shoulders. Step 1: Lie prone (on your stomach) on a mat with your legs extended, ankles slightly plantarflexed (toes pointing away from your shins), arms extended overhead with palms facing each other. Relax your head to align it with your spine. Step 2: Exhale, contract your abdominal and core muscles to stabilize your spine and slowly extend both hips (raise both legs) a few inches off the floor while simultaneously raising both arms a few inches off the floor. Keep both legs and arms extended, and avoid any rotation in each. Maintain your head and torso position, avoiding any arching in your back or raising of your head. Hold this position briefly. Step 3: Gently inhale and lower your legs and arms back toward your starting position without any movement in your lower back or hips. Medical Myths A person's normal body temperature isn't necessarily 98.6 F. That number is based on some research conducted by a German physician in the mid-19th century and has sort of stuck as a general rule. In fact, individual normal body temperatures can range between 97 F and 99 F. One study found that only 8% of 700 individual readings of 148 adults recorded the expected 98.6 F. Page 12 HAPPENINGS May 30, 2024 www.hap2it.com Actor Josh Brolin says decades of working with some of cinema's best directors gave him the knowledge and confidence to helm a Season 2 episode of his scifi/western/family drama, Outer Range. "I enjoyed it so much!" Brolin, 56, told UPI about his directorial debut in Episode 6 during a recent interview. "I am very lucky to have the support that I did," he said. "I was like a kid in the candy store. I did a lot of prep work. I did the work that was called for. I made sure that I wasn't going to embarrass myself or our show or Amazon." The Marvel-movie and Goonies icon said he also relied on everything he witnessed while acting for A-list directors and producers like Ridley Scott on American Gangster, Denis Villeneuve on Dune and Sicario, the Coen Brothers on No Country for Old Men and True Grit, Oliver Stone on W and Gus Van Sant on Milk. "I trusted what I learned from great people whom I've worked with. I've had a lot of influences that I've paid attention to, not just as an actor, but as a storyteller," he said. "I feel good about the episode. I feel like I had a lot of random interests that made no sense in my life for 50-some-odd years that I was suddenly able to funnel into one place," Brolin added. "It was like an, 'Oh, that's what it's for!' moment. i really, really had a good time and people were trusting of me, which meant a lot." Season 2 of the show about Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott (Brolin) and his family airing on Prime Video. The new episodes deal with the fallout from Royal's revelation to his wife, Cecelia (Lili Taylor), that he traveled as a boy from the 1880s through the portal on their property. They're about to lose that property because their accusedmurderer son, Perry (Tom Pelphrey), vanishes into the portal, and the bail they raised by mortgaging their ranch is forfeited. Brolin said Royal is vulnerable at the top of the season. "He's put himself out there to be honest and and to kind of reveal all these things that he's been holding back and that he's been [conflicted] about. He's hoping that it's gonna be celebrated and it's all gonna find its equilibrium really quick, and that's kind of the opposite of what happens," the actor said. "As anybody who knows that when something is kept from somebody for a very long time, especially several in a family unit, there's a recalibration that needs to take place, and that comes with a lot of chaotic and colorful behavior." Royal also hopes that by sharing his secret with Cecelia, the person he loves most in the world, he will be able to share the burden that comes with living a lie. Unfortunately, Cecilia isn't thrilled to hear his story. "She doesn't trust him after that, and she challenges him a lot. He becomes more challenged in the relationship with imogen [Poots'] character and the relationship with his sons," Brolin said. "All of it gets thrown into this vortex of uncertainty." The actor said it has been fascinating to ruminate on how responsible Royal should be for his decisions since he was thrown into such an extraordinary situation at a young age. "Can you blame him because he comes from this horrible thing that happened to him as a child?" he asked rhetorically. "He basically jumps in this hole to commit suicide. He gets thrown out at a different time. He gets adopted by this family. This lucky, lucky, amazing thing has happened. He starts to get into this kind of stoic shame -- this idea of a man being a man, back in the day," he added. "I love that [the show] kind of throws that on its head. It's like, 'Look, if you're living an idea of something, it's probably not gonna work out.' So, when you resort to a more organic version of yourself, you're probably gonna have an easier time." Season 2 closely examines Royal and Perry's strained relationship. "It's really emotional, superuncomfortable," Brolin said. "Perry is the type of character who, rightly so, takes everything extremely personally. He is the 'Charles Atlas' character, someone who holds up whatever information he is given, he holds it and he multiplies it psychically. I think that relationship is very hard." The real-life father of four children -- who is the son of actor James Brolin and stepson of singer Barbra Streisand -- said he picked the brain of his own oldest, Trevor, to try to understand the tension between Royal and Perry and how they tried to overcome it. "I have a great relationship with my son, who is 36, but we went through [difficult] times," Brolin said. "I would call him and say, 'Remember when you were 13 and you did this thing?' and he'd say, 'Yeah, do you remember when you did that thing?' and we can talk about it openly now," Brolin added. "You utilize everything that you can." Lewis Pullman, Tamara Podemski, Noah Reid, Matthew Maher and Will Patton co-star on the show. www.hap2it.com May 30, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 13 This Iowa-based magician doesn’t wear tuxedos or bring sparkly boxes containing white rabbits on stage, but instead has gained his following through his quick wit, clever illusions, and hilarious audience interaction. Nathan “Tricky” Allen has created one of the most unique magic/ comedy shows in the US, igniting standing ovations in every venue from comedy clubs to biker bars to casinos and Fortune 500 corporate events. Nathan has appeared on various television programs. If you want to laugh and be wowed all at the same time, then get your tickets for his show at the Kenosha Comedy Club on June 7th and 8th! Q: How is your performance style different from other comedians? A: I’m actually a comedianmagician hybrid. Years ago, I started off as a normal, boring magician, but eventually things went horribly, horribly right, when I began heckling myself and making fun of my own show as I was doing it. I realized that the audiences enjoyed the shows a lot more when they were laughing, so I leaned heavily into just having fun and treating every show like a party! Q: What should people expect when they come to your show? A: They should expect a magic show performed by a smart@$$ who knows how to have a good time and doesn’t take himself too seriously. I combine sleight-ofhand magic, stand-up comedy, dangerous tricks, stupid stunts, and hilarious (and unpredictable) audience interaction into one of the very few magic shows in all of America that is both geared for adults AND funny. Q: Since you’re a magician, I have to ask… what do you have up your sleeves? A: Nothing.Literally, nothing… I have a tattoo of the word “nothing” on my forearm, so I can honestly say I have nothing up my sleeve, at all times. Q: Can you pull a coin out of my ear? A: What? No. You should go see a doctor about that! Q: One more magician question… Could you make someone disappear for me? A: Sure. But if you need it to look like an accident, it’ll cost extra. Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 30, 2024 www.hap2it.com Nicki Minaj released after being detained in Netherlands for drug possession Police in the Netherlands released Nicki Minaj from custody after arresting the rapper over an incident with her luggage last weekend. Minaj, 41, was traveling to Manchester, England, from Amsterdam for a concert on her "Pink Friday 2 World Tour," which is supposed to take place at the Co-op Live Arena last Saturday. The rapper shared a video on her X account where a man is seen telling her that her luggage needs to be searched. In a separate video that Minaj recorded on Instagram Live and then wasshared by fan accounts on X, she asked an Amsterdam police officer why she was being arrested. The officer in the video replied, "because you're carrying drugs." The rapper in the video denied carrying drugs and repeatedly demanded a lawyer when the officer told her to get in a vehicle. The officer could be heard mentioning her concert and saying they would "try to get [her] there" as soon as possible. A spokesperson for the police in the Netherlands told NBC News it "arrested a 41-year-old American woman at Schiphol Airport because of possession of soft drugs." Zach Bryan releases 'Pink Skies,' first single from new album Zach Bryan is back with new music. The country music singer, 28, released the single "Pink Skies (Eulogy)" last week. In "Pink Skies," Bryan sings about the death of a parent, although he clarified the song is not explicitly about his mom, Annette Bryan, who died in August 2016. "I just think all the dynamics in families are beautiful and interesting and generationally it's a really cool thing," he wrote on social media. "Pink Skies" is the first single to debut from Bryan's forthcoming album, The Great American Bar Scene. The singer teased the album, saying it consists of 16 songs and a poem. "Proudest I've ever been of a piece of work," he added. Bryan has yet to announce a release date for The Great American Bar Scenebutsaid that the record is "finished." His most recent, self-titled album was released in August 2023. Bruce Springsteen postpones concerts over vocal issues American musician Bruce Springsteen has postponed a handful of European tour dates under doctor's orders due to vocal issues, according to a statement from the rock star. The postponements affect shows that were planned for Marseille, France; Prague, Czechia; and Milan, Italy. The 74-year-old "Born in the U.S.A." singer was scheduledto perform last weekend with his E Street Band at the Orange Velodrome in Marseille, but postponed the show earlier that day due to vocal issues. The other European tour dates were axed after a further examination "led doctors to determine that Bruce should not perform for the next 10 days," the statement published to his Instagram account said. "Bruce is recuperating comfortably, and he and the E Street Band look forward to resuming their hugely successful European stadium tour on June 12 in Madrid at the magnificent Civitas Metropolitan," it said, adding new dates for the postponed shows will be announced shortly. Charlie Puth releases one of his 'hardest' songs to write Charlie Puthis back with new music. The 32-year-old singersongwriter released the single "Hero" last week after teasing the song. Puth said that "Hero" is "about when you see someone you love hurting themselves, ruining the things in their life that are good, but you just can't save them." "It's one of the hardest songs I've ever had to write, but I wrote it in hopes that you've gone through something similar in your life, and that it can fill in the BLANK for you like it did for me," he wrote on Instagram. "I'm very excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it's a great representation of what's to come." Puth said he decided to release the song after being inspired by fellow singer Taylor Swift. "I've never put out a song like this before- it's very different for me, but I want to thank @taylorswift for letting me know musically that I just couldn't keep this on my hard drive any longer," he shared. Swift referenced Puth on her song "The Tortured Poets Department," which features the lyric, "We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist." Black Keys fall tour being revised, full refunds promised Rock duo The Black Keys announced a halt to the North American leg of the band's tour to rework which venues will host the shows. "Following the recent run of shows in the U.K. & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band," The Black Keys announced on X. Two local dates later in the year: November 7 at United Center and November 9 at Fiserv Forum are among the cancellations.
