MMORPGs are multiplayer by nature, but often, you can simply play an MMO by yourself. While group content is available, you can still have a good time while playing without any friends. For some MMOs though, they definitely excel if you have a group of friends to play with.

No Classes (Switch up your playstyle as often as you want) |
First up, we have Albion Online. This is a sandbox MMO with a player-driven economy. Rather than spending all of your time in solo instances and quests, you can work with or against your friends. With a player-driven economy, this also means that many of the in-game items are made by other players.
If you are a fan of PvP, then this is a great MMO option!
Albion Online is great if you don't feel like committing to a high-stakes story with your friends. Of course, you can complete quests, but you can also explore with your friends and have a good time!

Rich and Memorable Story |
Final Fantasy is a bit more structured than Albion Online, with a big emphasis on the story. It's important to note that a lot of the story involves solo instances that need to be completed individually, but there are still plenty of dungeons and open-world content for you to enjoy.
The world itself can be quite fun to explore with friends as well. Venture into new regions and cities with a group of friends, or sit back and start fishing; the choice is yours!

Focus on Open-World Exploration |
Numerous Open-World Bosses and Events |
Guild Wars 2 is another classic MMO that has amazing open-world exploration. The story is tied to your level, which means that to progress, you need to level up. Interestingly, leveling up isn't done just by vanquishing foes. You can gain a lot of experience by completing small tasks for NPCs (Renown Hearts) or by simply exploring.
This is my personal favorite MMO on the list! I play Guild Wars 2 with a few friends, as well as alone if I'm looking to complete large chunks of the story. Exploration of new maps is incredibly fun with friends by my side though.
If you and your friends don't want to be tied down by a story right away, Guild Wars 2 is a great choice. It's possible to explore several base-game maps before even setting out to complete the story. Through every expansion, Guild Wars 2 delivers with group-based content that is great for friends.

Overall, some of the content in Elder Scrolls Online can be tough to complete alone, which is another reason to play with a group of friends. Although you have to purchase the game to play, there is no monthly subscription that you need to continuously buy.

Some MMOs are good with friends simply because they are fun. Lost Ark doesn't have the best reputation, with many noting the simple and uninspired story, but with friends, you are sure to have an entertaining time.

I personally played this with a friend for the first time, making the experience quite enjoyable. It was fun to complete dungeons and raids together, as well as exciting to find Mokoko seeds together on new maps.
For a free game, Lost Ark is visually stunning. This MMO is filled with gorgeous environments, as well as tons of unique classes to choose from. Some noteworthy classes include Aeromancer, Bard, Artist, Slayer, and Souleater.

Okay, we all know what World of Warcraft is at this point. This iconic MMO has two versions that you can play though; Retail and Classic. Retail is the current version of the game, while Classic takes it back to the original version of World of Warcraft.
Overall, both Classic and Retail are great with friends! It's possible to favor just one, or dabble in both.
World of Warcraft has been through a lot of changes since its launch in 2004, with much of the older content gone from the Retail version. With a group of friends in World of Warcraft Classic though, you can naturally experience the World of Warcraft story.
